Integral to the Merlin MK3A’s undercarriage is a
complex hydraulic component called the Drag Strut.
This assists in locking the undercarriage in both the
up and down position. The understanding of the
internal sequence of operations was difficult to
visualise and teach, but with the aid of this cut-away
representation (fig 1), this difficulty has been
overcome.
The sequences can be viewed in real-time and
paused at any point in order to explain what is about
to happen. A separate, exaggerated, view of a
critical component has been added for clarity. Both
the ‘main’ and ‘nose’ gear are modelled.
